Anne – The City Hall 1963

The main thing I can remember is the noise.

It was a very long time ago, I don’t remember much. I know I went with some school friends and somebody must have taken us. We might have gone on the train, because there was a train from Sheffield to Chesterfield.

I’d moved from Hull to Chesterfield. We moved in the August, in the school holidays of 62, I went into the third year at school, my sister went into the first year. My sister was too young to have gone [to the concert].

I can just remember screaming and not me screaming either.

I do have a recollection we didn’t stay in our seats. My seat was quite near the back, I remember standing up at the front so we must all have moved forward. I don’t remember being pushed back [by Commissionaires] or anything like that. Looking at my ticket I was in the stalls N21 and it was 10 and sixpence.

I have a scrapbook full of lots of silly things really; pictures of the Beatles and loads of cuttings out of papers, the glue is coming through so you can’t read some of them. “Baby It’s Flu. Girls sob at the news. Teenage girls wept in the street last night after hearing that Paul McCartney was ill with gastric flu”.

I’ve got a picture here of George Harrison and Ringo Starr, around the cutouts I have annotated it with their shoe size, their weight and whether they were right or left handed!

I loved the Beatles for a long time then life took over, doing your GCE’s, A levels, talking about going to college and things like that.
