I was 14 when The Beatles appeared at Sheffield City Hall in 1963. Originally Roy Orbison was topping the bill, but Please Please Me had just reached number one, so The Beatles topped the bill and he was moved to second place.
In those days there were seats behind the stage, but during the concert people kept running down onto the stage where they were performing. After that, those seats were removed. There was so much screaming you could hardly hear the songs, but it was enough just to see them.
I’ve been thinking about the concert and something that stays in my mind was Paul turning round and waving. This leads me to believe that I must have been sitting in one of those seats behind the stage, as we’d done this before at other concerts. I certainly didn’t run onto the stage as I’d have been afraid of getting thrown out!
I actually lived near Barnsley but attended Penistone Grammar School and had a lot of friends from Stocksbridge. They were nearer to Sheffield, so we often went out together. I must have caught the service bus there and back but managed somehow.
You can appreciate it’s over 60 years ago, so my memory is a bit hazy!
