I went to see the Beatles at the City Hall 1962 or 63. I was at Brincliffe Grammar School. I remember standing outside the Grand Hotel afterwards with hundreds of fans. Every time anyone opened a window we all screamed. It was madness! I was wearing a mustard A line mini skirt, navy satin blouse with a bow and a navy short, fitted blazer jacket. All probably from C&A. Also navy patent shoes from Timpsons.

I remember because we did not have many clothes for going out as we were 15 and I bought these with the money I earned working at Woolworths on the Moor as a Saturday girl. My hair was long and worn fastened back in a bouffant. I think either Helen Shapiro or Roy Orbison was on as well. My husband was in the crowd too but I did not know him then!

On Monday back at school one of the girls in our class said she had been out with the Beatles to a party! We didn’t believe her really but we were jealous in case it was true.

Then a few years ago we were on a cruise and attended a talk on sixties music with a section about the Beatles. The speaker was saying how ordinary they were and how their taxi driver had invited them to a birthday party after the show. This was at a house on the Wisewood Estate. Then a member of the audience said he knew about this as he lived nearby.

So it seems my school friend was possibly telling the truth! (Although we usually contact each other at Xmas as she is not in Sheffield I haven’t asked her about it.)

I do remember when the Beatles first sang Love Me Do on something like Look North and we were all excited talking about it at school. We used to make lists of songs and give them a score up to 5 then we compared our lists at school.

We all gave Love Me Do a 5.
